Tips and Tricks to get the best rental home experience:
Get the most from your budget:
- Book your vacation home in the Spring or Fall to enjoy warm weather while saving money and avoiding crowds. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to book an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer months.
- Reserve your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules generally open 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families reserve their Summer rental homes during Thanksgiving and Christmas get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager if your group qualifies for a discount.
- Property managers frequently offer guests an option to purchase vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which commonly will cost 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed vacation time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for more information.
- Find a copy of your local visitors guide upon checking in. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, visitors guides contain offers and deals for nearby shops and restaurants.
Finding the best vacation rental:
- First, have your family commit to a vacation week and a maximum budget.
- Determine how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration your family needs. 408 Capt John Fripp Villa - New to VRBO! Resort Access Included! has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Precise details about bedrooms and bed counts & types is almost always available online. If not, reach out to the property management company before reserving the rental. Remember that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which frequently includes pull-out couches. You will need to work out what configuration is best for your vacation group.
- Is your group looking for special amenities? Most rental search websites include search filters for amenities.
- Suitable accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. Confirm all required amenities are available and included before reserving a rental.
- If your group is vacationing with pets, you must reserve a pet-friendly rental. Make sure to ask for details on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Usually, property owners charge pet deposits and fees.
During your stay:
- Store the manager's contact information in your smartphone.
- Upon check-in, make note of any damages to the property and immediately alert the property manager. Record all correspondence just in case a dispute arises.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a hot tub, A/V setup or coffee maker. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief telephone call prevents lots of concerns.
- Respect your neighbors. Often times, nearby homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting noise limits and parking policies can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Residents can typically help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to spend a rainy day, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
- Protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by locking the rental while you are gone, just like you would back home.
- Just prior to departing, complete a final walk-through to confirm you haven't forget anything. Make sure to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Walk through the rental a final time and keep an eye out for damage. We suggest inspecting the property with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the host is not available, ensure that you take photos of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
- Did your group have a terrific stay? Many rental managers make it easy for customers to provide reviews. If your property and/or property manager was terrific, they would love to hear about it. If anything was wrong and they failed to address it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.
