Our top Vacation rental tips:
Find your perfect rental:
- Book your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules usually open a year in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups reserve their Summer rentals during Winter holiday get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- To find the best value, change your group's vacation to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and October offer excellent weather, , and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to book an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer months.
- Owners sometimes offer discounts for veterans and active duty military. Remember to ask your property manager if special offers are available for your group.
- Management companies and individual rental owners usually offer guests an option to buy trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which costs between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed vacation time as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for specifics.
- Look for your local Beaufort, SC area magazine when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great information, visitors guides contain discounts for nearby shops and restaurants.
Narrow your rental Search:
- Choose your vacation dates and spending budget.
- Decide how many beds and the bed configuration your family requires. Close to beach access has 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed counts & types is commonly accessible online. If you don't see them listed, reach out to the host before you book the property. Note that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which usually includes sofa beds in living rooms.
- Some rental properties allow pets, and others don't. Allowable types of pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and added fees may apply. Ask the owner about your furry family members before booking.
- Visiting for a single event? If so, use a map search to locate nearby rentals.
- Proper accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Make certain to inquire about wheel chair accessibility, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
Additional considerations:
- Add the owner's phone number to your phone. Take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, intercom or appliance. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief text message can prevent a lot of concerns.
- Ensure you protect the owner (and your things!) by locking the property while you are away, just like you would back home.
- Note any issues with the rental during check in, and immediately send them to the property manager. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain time stamps that are valuable if there is a dispute.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like troublesome vacationers bothering your peace and quiet. Practice the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great restaurants and attractions you would've never otherwise known about!
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Neighbors can frequently help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to take kids for a treat, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
- Re-check the vacation property to make sure that you've packed all of your family's items on check-out day. Make sure to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden treasure. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Please make sure to walk through the property one final time and scan for damages to contents or the property itself. We recommend walking through with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the manager isn't available, ensure that you take photos and video of the property to record its condition.
- Did you have a great vacation? Many rental managers make it easy for travelers to provide feedback. If your rental property and/or host was wonderful, they would love to hear about it. If anything was inoperable and they failed to address it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
